Assessment of the Role of Digital Media in Shaping or Distorting Islamic Moral Values Among Muslim Youths in Nasarawa L.G.A., Κανο State

    Abstract

In the digital age, the pervasive influence of media has raised critical concerns about its impact on moral and cultural values, particularly among youth populations. This study investigates the role of digital media in shaping or distorting Islamic moral values among Muslim youths in Nassarawa Local Government Area, Kano State, Nigeria. Anchored in Media Effects Theory, Uses and Gratifications Theory and Islamic Moral-Ethical Framework, the research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys with qualitative interviews to explore how Muslim youths engage with digital content and how this engagement affects their moral outlook. Findings reveal a dual role of digital media while a significant number of youths access religious content that reinforces Islamic teachings, many are simultaneously exposed to content that contradicts traditional moral values, leading to internal conflicts and identity struggles. The study highlights the mediating roles of religiosity, family influence and peer groups in shaping how digital content is interpreted and internalized. Moreover, various respondents exhibit agency in their media choices, actively seeking content that aligns with their beliefs while avoiding conflicting messages. The study concludes that digital media serves both as a platform for religious reinforcement and a vector for moral distortion. It recommends the development of culturally and religiously grounded media literacy programs, increased involvement of Islamic scholars in digital spaces and greater parental guidance to help youths navigate the complex digital landscape. The findings contribute to a growing body of literature on digital religion and provide practical insights for educators, policymakers and religious institutions concerned with youth moral development in a contemporary digitally connected world.
