An Evaluation of the Yoruba Concept of Prognostic Power of Ifa in the Affairs of Humankind

Abstract: This paper examines the historical origins, philosophical foundations, and practical applications of Ifa, highlighting its role in health, conflict resolution, and spiritual alignment. It also explores the dynamic relationship between predestination (ayanmo) and human agency, demonstrating how individuals can shape their destinies through adherence to Ifa’s teachings. Despite its deep-rooted significance, Ifa procedural system faces modern challenges, including the decline in trained priests, the influence of foreign religions, and the loss of oral traditions. However, its adaptability has ensured its survival beyond Africa, influencing religious practices in other African regions and beyond. The study therefore, using historical and phenomenological methods, emphasizes the need for documentation, digital preservation, and the education of younger generations to sustain Ifa’s relevance among the people. By preserving and promoting Ifa prognostic power, Yoruba society can retain a vital link to its spiritual heritage while ensuring that its wisdom continues to guide present and future generations.
